The background wool felt for this rustic boho brooch is created from wool yarn which is manipulated and needle felted (essentially stabbed with a barbed needle hundreds of times to mesh the fibres together into a textile) and adorned with little silver beads, a raw quartz crystal and African Mali stone
The brooch is around 2 inches (5cm) and 2 1/2 inches (6 1/2cm) long with a brooch fastener (with safety) at the back.
Needle felting - as opposed to wet felting - is often associated with making 3D, dimensional structures from unspun wool. But, with this piece I was keen to explore the manipulation of spun yarn into a functional textile using a dry process. I wasn't sure it would actually work and it did take a lot of stabbing, but the resulting textile is a little different from needle or wet felted textile.
