A heavy silver pre-loved bracelet loaded with an assemblage of charms: A little dress watch (no longer working), religious medallions, Mexican Milagros, sterling silver ankh and horse charm, Indian brass bell, wrapped Quartz, mother of pearl button, stone and bone beads. Too many to count; a gathering of everyday talismans and amulets to fiddle with which jingle and jangle on your wrist, each painstakingly attached to the bracelet's foundation chain.
The large crystal quartz charm is set into a silver salt shaker lid for extra drama. It's comfortable to wear but it can be removed with its lobster clasp.
Around 7 1/2 inches or 19 cm end to end and reasonably weighty. The core bracelet, which although it does not have a hallmark, is real silver.
The wearing of charms probably begun with their use as portable amulets and talismans. Evidence of this is found way back in history. Shells used as adornments in Africa 75,000 years ago and little fish charms used by Christians to identify each other during the days of the Roman Empire, prayers or magical texts encased in leather or sewn into clothing, hidden from view. Charm bracelets seem to have made their first appearance 600-400 BC with the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Hittites. So this piece continues a very long and interesting tradition.
